본 장비는 산소 및 호흡 보조가 필요한 환자들에게 산소를 공기와 혼합하여 그 호흡가스를 가온 가습하여 고유량 또는 저유량(2~80L/min)으로 제공해 주는 장비이다.
이 때 생성되는 약간의 양압으로 인해 흡기 시 호흡 일량을 감소시키고 폐포의 산소 교환을 촉진시켜 저산소증을 예방하고 CO2 축적을 최소화함으로써 정상 호흡으로의 회복을 도와준다.
FiO2는 21~100% 까지 설정이 가능하여 환자 상태에 따라 결정하여 사용할 수 있고, 고유량으로 인해 환자의 최고 흡기 압력 요구량을 충족시켜 주어 외부 공기가 혼합되지 않아 설정된 산소 농도만큼만 제공되는 장점이 있다.
또한, 의료용 온습도조절기가 내장되어 차고 건조한 상태의 가스를 최적으로 가온 가습하여 환자에게 제공하므로 기도 점막의 건조와 손상을 예방해 주고, 분비물의 질을 묽게 유지하여 배출을 용이하게 해 주며, 점액 섬모 운반 시스템의 기능을 잘 유지시켜 분비물의 축적을 예방한다.
