Ultraviolet C (UV-C, 100–280 nm) is the type of ultraviolet radiation with the shortest wavelength and highest energy.

Although it is almost entirely absorbed by the ozone layer and rarely reaches the Earth’s surface, it is widely used in artificial applications due to its powerful sterilizing properties.

1. Key Features and Benefits

Powerful Disinfection: It destroys the DNA and RNA structures of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and mold, eliminating their ability to reproduce and killing them.

Applications: Widely used in various industrial sectors, including water purification, indoor air purification, air conditioner sterilization, and disinfection for medical devices and food hygiene. Recently, UV-C lamps and LEDs that have undergone UV-C testing have also been incorporated into hygiene appliances (such as air purifiers and toothbrush sterilizers).

2. Effects on the Human Body and Precautions

  • Causes Cell Damage: Due to its extremely high energy, direct exposure to the human body can penetrate the skin’s stratum corneum and cause severe burns; prolonged exposure can damage the DNA of skin cells and lead to skin cancer (such as melanoma).

Threat to Eye Health: It can damage the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye, causing photokeratitis or cataracts.

Safety Precautions: Since everyday sunscreen is primarily designed to block UVA and UVB rays, you must strictly avoid direct exposure of the skin or eyes when using sterilization devices.

3.  The Principle of UV Sterilization

  • Ultraviolet light is inherently extremely harmful to all cellular organisms, and in multicellular organisms, it primarily affects the skin and eyes that are exposed to the outside environment.  For single-celled organisms, it is nothing short of a “death ray”; exposure to UV light results in their complete eradication. It inflicts fatal biological damage on the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, blocking cell division and replication. For this reason, it is widely utilized as a powerful sterilization and disinfection technology.

4. Automated UV-C Disinfection System for Medical Environments

Lichtzen Co., Ltd. has developed an automated disinfection system suitable for medical environments that utilizes UV-C light. Designed with the goals of “disinfection, infection transmission prevention, and UV sterilization” to ensure ease of use, absolute safety, and continuous operation, this masterpiece was created through collaborative research between LITGEN Co., Ltd. and infection control experts, supported by the Government-wide Infectious Disease Research and Development Foundation (GFID). LITGEN Co., Ltd.’s UV-C disinfection solution, the UV-C Automated Disinfection System for Medical Environments, offers a high sterilization efficacy of 5Log or more, along with safety, ease of use, lightweight design, and rapid after-sales service thanks to its domestic production. It stands out as a powerful UV-C disinfection solution that delivers excellent value for money. (Brand name: Wonder-Ray-S8W4)

In terms of disinfection efficacy, this high-performance, highly reliable product meets the requirements of BS 8628:2022 (European Standard) with a disinfection rate of 99.999% or higher, and has demonstrated high disinfection efficacy throughout hospital rooms in clinical evaluations.

The Wonder-Ray-S8W4 features a patented wing-shaped upper lamp structure that automatically extends during operation and retracts afterward, minimizing UV-C irradiation blind spots and enhancing portability and storage convenience. Since UV-C exposure is hazardous to humans, we have ensured safety through multiple safety mechanisms, including a human motion sensor.  We are currently developing a simulation program in collaboration with a specialized company to calculate irradiation levels based on the size and layout of hospital rooms. Once completed, we plan to offer this program at a reasonable additional cost to provide users with high value and convenience.
