Hyundai Motors, Kia and Samsung Electronics join forces to connect residential and mobile spaces
Hyundai Motors and Kia signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Electronics on the 3rd for a Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car service partnership, improving connectivity between residential and mobile spaces. He announced that he would strengthen it. Under this agreement, Hyundai and Kia customers will be able to remotely control various electronic devices in their cars by touching the screen of the infotainment system or using voice commands. Conversely, remote vehicle control is also possible through AI speakers, TVs, and smartphone apps.
This is provided through an organic combination between Hyundai Motor Company and Kia’s connected car service and Samsung Electronics’ global IoT (Internet of Things) platform, ‘SmartThings’. In particular, in addition to Samsung Electronics' products, various devices that provide IoT functions can be registered on SmartThings, which is expected to deliver a seamless connection experience to customers' daily lives.
For example, on the way home from work in the hot summer, you can run 'home mode' to activate the registered air conditioner and robot vacuum cleaner, and turn on the lights to return home to a more comfortable living space, or run 'away mode' to check the condition of the vehicle before going out. You can use it by checking, executing the air conditioning function in advance, and getting into a vehicle with an appropriate temperature.
Hyundai Motors and Kia provide services by running various modes registered in the SmartThings app in the vehicle to minimize device operation while driving. In particular, in addition to screen touch and voice commands, we plan to implement location-based automatic execution, such as automatic execution when approaching the registered location, to make it more convenient for customers.
Also, electric vehicle drivers can use SmartThings' integrated home energy management service to check the energy usage of their home and vehicle and adjust the optimal charging time.
Hyundai Motors and Kia plan to expand car-to-home and home-to-car services to overseas customers by linking connected car services with SmartThings.
To this end, Hyundai Motors and Kia plan to develop an infotainment system that can provide stable services and later provide this function to existing vehicles through OTA (Over-the-Air) updates.
Hyundai Motor/Kia Infotainment Development Center Executive Director Haeyoung Kwon said, “This will be an opportunity to utilize the connected car’s car-to-home/home-to-car services more diversely and conveniently.” He added, “The travel journey of Hyundai Motor/Kia customers around the world is “We plan to accelerate technology development to make this a meaningful time,” he said.
Samsung Electronics Vice President Park Chan-woo said, “This business agreement will enable home-to-car and integrated home energy management services optimized for future lifestyles,” and added, “We will strengthen customer experience by connecting the SmartThings platform and cars.” .
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motors and Kia have previously provided car-to-home and home-to-car services through collaboration with telecommunication companies and construction companies. The Car-to-Home service, which provides operation of six items including lighting, plugs, gas circuit breaker, ventilation, air conditioner, and boiler, and the Home-to-Car service, which includes vehicle air conditioning, remote start, and charging management, are providing connectivity to a wider variety of devices through this partnership. We plan to support it.
